You Do Not Need a Better Mouse. You Need to Stop Doing These 6 Things.
Part 2 of 3. Six settings and habits that add latency, all of them free to fix, and all of them more expensive to ignore than any peripheral you were about to buy.
Part 1 established the chain. This one is the list of places your milliseconds leak, ranked by how much they cost and how little effort they take to fix.
Every item here is free. That is deliberate — the paid fixes come after, and mostly are not needed.
1. Your GPU is pinned at 100%
The single biggest one, and the least intuitive.
When the GPU is fully saturated, frames stack up in the render queue waiting to be drawn. Your frame rate looks great and your latency is terrible, because every frame you see was produced several frames ago.
The fix: cap your frame rate slightly below what your system can actually sustain, so the GPU never fully saturates. Reflex-style latency modes in supported games do the same thing automatically. Free, takes two minutes, and it is routinely worth more than the entire jump from 144Hz to 240Hz.
2. V-Sync doing exactly what you asked it to
V-Sync eliminates tearing by making frames wait for the display. Waiting is latency — that is the mechanism, not a bug.
The fix: if you have a variable-refresh panel, use it, cap a few frames below the panel maximum, and leave V-Sync off in game. If you do not, decide honestly whether you care more about tearing or about response, because you are choosing between them.

3. Polling rate left on default
Plenty of mice ship at 500Hz, some cheap ones at 125Hz. At 125Hz your mouse is only reporting its position every 8 ms — worse than an entire frame interval on a 120Hz panel.
The fix: set 1000Hz in the mouse software. Higher rates exist and the returns fall off sharply above 1000Hz, while CPU overhead rises. 1000Hz is the sensible default for almost everyone.
4. Overlays, capture and RGB software
Every overlay that draws on top of your game injects itself into the render path. Some are well-behaved. Several popular ones are not, and a few RGB and peripheral suites are worse than the overlays.
The fix: turn overlays off one at a time and see what you actually miss. Most people miss none of them. Keep capture software running only when you are actually recording — our game streaming tools guide covers the trade-offs.
Worth separating two different problems here: software you chose and software you did not. 5. Power and USB settings that throttle your input
Windows power plans can idle a CPU into a low state that adds latency to every input, and USB selective suspend can put a hub to sleep between polls.

6. Sensitivity that changes every week
Not a millisecond problem — a you problem, and a bigger one.
Every time you change sensitivity, DPI or field of view, you reset your muscle memory. Players who chase settings monthly never build the consistency that actually wins duels, and then blame the mouse.
The fix: pick a sensitivity, write it down, and do not change it for a month. Then judge.
The six fixes above cost nothing. That is exactly why nobody markets them to you — there is no product attached to "turn the overlay off".

Five of the six are done in under fifteen minutes. The sixth is the one that actually decides whether the other five matter, and it is the one nobody does.
What is worth spending money on afterwards
Once the six above are done, hardware differences start to be perceptible rather than theoretical — and the ones that matter are mostly about fit, not speed.

Q: Does capping my frame rate reduce input lag? A: Yes, when it stops the GPU from being pinned at 100%. A saturated GPU fills the render queue, so frames you see were produced several frames earlier. Capping slightly below your sustainable maximum keeps the queue short.
Q: Is 1000Hz polling enough, or should I get an 8000Hz mouse? A: 1000Hz is the sensible default. Above it the latency reduction is small and CPU overhead rises, so the benefit is marginal for almost everyone.
Q: Do RGB and peripheral apps really affect performance? A: Some do, noticeably — particularly suites that install overlays or poll hardware aggressively. Turn them off one at a time and measure rather than assuming.
